Youngo / Human Rights & Reducing Inequality and Inclusion Rights

30th November 2023

Dear COP28 Officials, Press and Journalists,

Subject: Global Youth Statement on Climate Action

We, the global youth, gathered at COP28 in the UAE, come together to address the urgent need for ambitious and immediate climate action. As representatives of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, we emphasize the following key points:

1. Urgency and Ambition:
The latest scientific evidence demands urgent and ambitious actions to limit global warming to well below 1.5 degrees Celsius. We call upon all nations to enhance their commitments and take immediate steps to achieve net-zero emissions.

2. Climate Justice:
Recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities, we advocate for climate justice. Solutions must prioritize the needs and rights of marginalized and frontline communities, ensuring an equitable and inclusive transition to a sustainable future.

3. Youth Empowerment:
Acknowledging that the youth are key stakeholders in the fight against climate change, we urge decision-makers to involve young people in policy-making processes and create opportunities for meaningful participation at all levels.

4. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Protection:
Preserving biodiversity and protecting ecosystems are integral to climate resilience. We call for comprehensive measures to safeguard the planet’s biodiversity and enhance ecosystem resilience in the face of climate change.

5. Technology Transfer and Capacity Building:
Developed nations should actively support developing countries in technology transfer, capacity building, and financial assistance to facilitate their transition to sustainable and low-carbon economies.

In conclusion, we urge all parties at COP28 to listen to the voices of the youth and take bold actions to secure a sustainable and just future for all.

Public Statement: COP28 in the UAE

As representatives of the youth constituency, we, Youngo consists of many youth-led organizations / Network, Human Rights, Reducing Inequality & Inclusion Rights and the range of Working Groups of Youngo from a range of Climate Thematic groups: which we currently have a number of 20+ WG’s. The key issues in this public statement at COP28 in the UAE clearly highlights our collective vision and demands for a sustainable future. Our key messages are as follows:

1. Youth-Led Solutions:
Emphasize the importance of recognizing and supporting youth-led initiatives and innovations in climate action. Youth are at the forefront of finding creative and impactful solutions to the climate crisis.

2. Interconnected Crises:
Acknowledge the interconnections between climate change, social justice, and economic inequality. Addressing the climate crisis requires a holistic approach that considers the broader socio-economic context.

3. Transparent and Inclusive Decision-Making:
Advocate for transparent and inclusive decision-making processes at COP28. Ensure that all stakeholders, including youth representatives, have meaningful opportunities to participate and contribute to negotiations and discussions.

4. Accountability:
Stress the need for accountability mechanisms to hold nations accountable for their climate commitments. Establish clear and enforceable measures to track and report progress on emissions reduction targets.
