Every mile you run is more than just a physical journey—it’s a triumph of the mind, body, and spirit.
As thousands of runners lace up for the iconic TCS London Marathon and the Manchester Marathon, I want to send out a heartfelt GOOD LUCK to every runner preparing to hit the streets!

Marathon day is a whirlwind of excitement, nerves, and adrenaline. Staying grounded through it all is key. That’s where mindfulness can be your ultimate superpower.

Before we dive into practical tips for race day mindfulness, let’s take a moment to appreciate the rich history of these legendary races you’re about to be part of.

The London Marathon

  • First held in 1981, founded by Chris Brasher and John Disley.
  • Inspired after witnessing the community spirit of the New York City Marathon.
  • Today, it’s one of the world’s “Big Six” major marathons and attracts over 40,000 runners every year.
  • It’s raised over £1 billion for charity since it began — making it one of the largest single-day fundraising events globally.
  • The route takes runners past London’s most historic landmarks, from Tower Bridge to Buckingham Palace.

The Manchester Marathon

  • One of the oldest races in Britain, with its roots tied to the 1908 Olympic marathon.

When you run London or Manchester, you’re not just running a race—you’re writing your own chapter into a story that’s decades old, filled with heart, grit, and inspiration.

Mindfulness Tips for Marathon Runners
Whether you’re toeing the start line for the first time or chasing a new PB, these mindfulness strategies can help you stay centered from Mile 1 to Mile 26.2 (and beyond):

  1. Breathe with Intention
Simple but powerful: focus on your breath.
Try a 4-6 rhythm: inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6. It calms nerves and re-centers your focus when the race energy gets overwhelming.
  2. Run the Mile You’re In
Forget the miles behind you. Don’t stress about the miles ahead.
Focus on THIS mile, THIS step, THIS moment. Trust that each small moment builds the finish.
  3. Positive Mantras
Pick a short phrase to repeat when things get tough:

“I am strong.”

“One step at a time.”

“I’ve got this.”
It can drown out doubts and keep your energy positive.

Marathon Mile Markers
  1. Connect with Your Senses
Notice the sounds of the crowd, the rhythm of your breathing, the feel of your feet hitting the pavement.
Sensory focus keeps you grounded and in the now.
  2. Welcome the Challenge
Pain is part of the process. Instead of resisting it, acknowledge it: “This is the part where I get stronger.”
Mindfully working through discomfort will make your finish even sweeter.
  3. Smile Often
Science shows that smiling—even when it feels tough—boosts resilience and endurance.
Smile at volunteers. Smile at fellow runners. Smile at the finish line.
