UNLAWFUL REMOVAL OF TWO MINORS: MOTHER DEMANDS JUSTICE AMID METROPOLITAN POLICE AND IOPC INACTION
London, UK – A mother, Ms. Campbell, has been fighting for justice after the unlawful removal of her two daughters by the Children’s Services of Richmond Council on March 24, 2023. Despite the serious nature of the case, both the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have failed to take adequate action to rectify the situation.
The removal, executed under an 18-week interim care order, was conducted without legal consent or justification, leaving Ms. Campbell devastated and her daughters unlawfully separated from their family. Multiple relocation requests have been made to the West London Family Court in Feltham, yet no progress has been made to reunite the family.
Ms. Campbell has lodged formal complaints with the Metropolitan Police, providing all necessary evidence under references (Crime Reference Number) and {Met Police Reference Number}, calling for the prosecution of those involved, including the organization “Achieving for Children” and Richmond Council’s Children’s Services. However, the Metropolitan Police has yet to take meaningful steps toward justice.
The IOPC, the police complaints watchdog, which is supposed to ensure accountability and uphold standards in police conduct, has also failed Ms. Campbell. Despite acknowledging the severity of the case, the IOPC has delayed allocating the matter to a casework manager and has stated that their role is limited to reviewing the Metropolitan Police’s handling of the complaint rather than investigating the substantive issues.
Ms. Campbell’s struggle highlights significant flaws in the system designed to protect children and hold authorities accountable. “The inaction by both the Metropolitan Police and the IOPC is deeply concerning,” said Ms. Campbell. “My daughters have been unlawfully taken from me, and despite my best efforts, those responsible are not being held to account.”
In a formal pre-action protocol letter, Ms. Campbell has demanded immediate action from the IOPC and the Metropolitan Police, including a thorough investigation into the misconduct and financial compensation for the distress caused. Should these demands not be met within 14 days, Ms. Campbell intends to initiate judicial review proceedings against both institutions.
This case raises critical questions about the effectiveness of oversight bodies and the protection of children’s rights in the UK. It underscores the need for urgent reform to ensure that no other family has to endure such a traumatic experience.
About Ms. Campbell:
