Monday Motivation Word: Ceasefire

#Ceasefire

▪︎The term ‘ceasefire’ is the antonym of the military expression ‘open fire’ and signifies a call to terminate hostilities. Ceasefire agreements are regularly announced as part of a peace process and can suggest a level of commitment between warring parties to seek an end to armed conflict.

▪︎Ceasefires are generally binding, but often fleeting. Like a cessation of hostilities or a truce, they’re designed to keep violence at bay for a designated period of time. Importantly, they do not indicate an end to conflict, but ideally create space for parties to negotiate potential solutions to conflict.

▪︎Unlike declarations of a cessation of hostilities or a truce, a cease-fire is generally meant to be binding. Like a cessation of hostilities or truce, it is only temporary in nature, but is generally expected to last for a longer period of time.

▪︎The world is rapidly changing. In our view, key geopolitical risks to watch in 2024 include tensions between Russia and NATO, cyberattacks, strategic competition between the US and China, considering anti-/deglobalization, climate risk, energy security and COVID-19 pandemic fallout.
