▪︎What does Miscarriage of justice mean? A miscarriage of justice is generally considered to be when an individual is tried, convicted and punished for a crime they did not commit. The meaning of miscarriage of justice was considered in R (on the application of Adams) v Secretary of State for Justice (2011) UKSC 18.

▪︎Following a campaign by a local newspaper led by Don Hale, in which Sewell was purported to be promiscuous, Downing’s conviction was overturned in 2002. The case is thought to be the longest miscarriage of justice in British legal history, and attracted worldwide media attention.
▪︎Women has risen from 6.8% to 8.5% (81 to 121 people) people aged under 25 has risen from 8.3% to 9.4% (99 to 134 people) those with literacy issues has risen from 11.3% to 17.9% (135 to 255 people) people from an ethnic minority has risen from 24.4% to 25.0% (292 to 355 people)
