First and foremost, the responsibility of a trustee is to act in the best interest of the organization and its beneficiaries. This means making decisions that are often difficult, involving financial, strategic, and ethical considerations. I’ve had to carefully evaluate proposals, budgets, and investments, always keeping the long-term sustainability and mission of the organization in mind.
Being a trustee has also brought me face to face with the dynamic and diverse world of nonprofit management. I’ve had the opportunity to work with passionate individuals and experienced leaders, learning from their expertise and dedication. This experience has broadened my horizons and deepened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by the nonprofit sector.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of being a trustee is the sense of contributing to positive change. Whether it’s shaping the organization’s strategic direction, overseeing its financial health, or participating in the search for visionary leadership, trustees play a pivotal role in making a difference. Knowing that my decisions can impact the lives of those the organization serves is a humbling and motivating experience.
Did you also know 1 in 12 trustees are called John or David. Fewer than 3% of trustees are under 30. It’s no secret that board diversity is an issue.
