1/ “Remember, remember the 5th of November.”

Today is the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot when Guy Fawkes and others failed to assassinate King James I.

But how did the Guy Fawkes mask become a symbol of Anarchists, Bitcoiners and Freedom fighters? #FifthofNovember

Let’s dive in..

2/ Often referred to as the “Anonymous mask,” the contemporary version of the Guy Fawkes mask was brought into existence by David Lloyd’s illustrations in the “V for Vendetta” graphic novel, authored by Alan Moore in 1982.

3/ Lloyd’s design gained further fame in the 2005 film adaptation of “V for Vendetta” and has since been used by the online activist group Anonymous, and various other anti-establishment movements.

So how does Guy Fawkes himself fit into all of this?

Let’s go back to 1605..

4/ The year 1605, nearly six decades after King Henry VIII initiated the Protestant Church of England, breaking from the Papacy, was a period rife with conflict and suppression of Catholics in England, who had all but lost hope for religious liberty. #Fireworks #Firework

5/ In 1604, King James I delivered a speech aimed at peace through the “profession of the true religion.” A subsequent bill presented in Parliament was poised to ban the Catholic faith in England completely.

6/ Aiming to restore a Catholic monarchy, a group of English Catholics led by Robert Catesby, and including Guy Fawkes, met in secret to plot the blowing up of the House of Lords during the opening of Parliament on the 5th of November, 1605. #fireworkfoundation  @fireworkfoundation

7/ Despite meticulous planning, their scheme was doomed to fail. An anonymous letter exposing the plot found its way to King James I. #KingJames

On the 4th of November, 1605, the authorities searched the House of Lords, discovering #GuyFawkes guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder.
