Disabled lives are treated as expendable.

Again.

Despite campaigners’ efforts, the government decided against implementing evacuation plans for disabled high-rise residents and brushed off the idea of making it a legal requirement.

Campaign group Claddag wanted it to be a legal requirement for escape plans to be in place for those who might not be able to get out safely in an emergency.

But a Home Office consultation found the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s recommendations would be too “expensive and impractical”.

In the Grenfell fire, which killed 72 people in June 2017, 41% of the tower block’s disabled residents died.

The ongoing neglect and disregard for disabled lives in the face of cost concerns is a deeply distressing and worrying reality. It contributes to the perception of disabled lives as being of lesser value.

The failure of some building management companies to go beyond their legal obligations adds to the dangerous disregard for the lives of disabled and vulnerable residents.

Unbelievably, a Home Office spokesperson said: “We are pleased with the court’s decision as it allows us to get on with delivering proposals that enhance the safety of residents whose ability to self-evacuate in an emergency may be compromised.

The high percentage of disabled residents who tragically lost their lives in the Grenfell fire further highlights the urgent need for a more inclusive and empathetic approach to policy-making and society as a whole.

So what can you do?

You can raise awareness of this injustice and shed light on the challenges faced by disabled individuals regarding safety and evacuation plans.

It’s as easy as sharing this post or starting conversations with your friends, family, and colleagues about the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of disabled people in emergency situations.

Support Claddag; they have three asks https://buff.ly/46SV8U4

If you are unable to evacuate a building independently or need an alternative way of being alerted that there is an emergency evacuation, don’t hesitate to ask for a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP).
