• Sexuality education aims to develop and strengthen the ability of children and young people to make conscious, satis- fying, healthy and respectful choices regarding relationships, sexuality and emotional and physical health. Sexual- ity education does not encourage chil- dren and young people to have sex.

¤ Stages

• For clarity, the developmental stages are classified into four very broad categories: younger children (five to seven), intermediate children (eight to ten), older children (eleven to twelve), and teenagers.

¤ What is a good age to talk about sex?

• “For all families today,” Chattha concludes, her own children included, “the discussion on body basics and consent should start at 5. The discussion on pubertal changes can start between 7 to 9 years of age, tailored to their emotional maturity and also signs that they might be early bloomers.
