This morning (26 January), the letter calling out the outrageous appointment of COP28 president was officially sent to UN Secretary General António Guterres and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell.

The letter can be found on the KBPO website in English, Franćais, Español, as well as Português, Arabic and Turkish (many thanks to ESCR-Net and CAN-Europe for the last two).

A press release with quotes from constituencies and KBPO members can be found here in English here, with more languages coming soon.

Below is a short sample social media post you can adapt to help amplify in English, Franćais, Español, as well as Português:

EN:

@simonstiel/@antonioguterres- It is outrageous that an oil executive has been appointed president of #COP28. I join 425 groups from around the world in demanding #BigPolluters no longer be allowed to undermine the global response to climate change. It’s past time we #KickBigPollutersOut.

FR:

Below is a summary of the context:

On Jan 11, Sultan Al Jaber, the chief executive of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world’s largest oil producers, was named as the president of the upcoming round of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) global negotiations (COP28) happening in November. Shockingly, world governments and politicians have taken to the media and social media to welcome this news.

But appointing the head executive of one of the top 15 corporations that is most responsible for global emissions to oversee the world’s response to the climate crisis is not a cause for celebration. No COP overseen by a fossil fuel executive can be seen as legitimate.

Ahead of COP27 last November, more than 450 organizations united in demanding an end to Big Polluter’s stranglehold of climate policy. We are now faced with another critical moment where our voices must be heard.
