▪︎ Even before the pandemic, our mental health services were creaking from generations of under-investment. There are now 1.6 million people on the waiting list for mental health services and a further 8 million who can’t even get on the list. Mental health must be at the centre of Covid-19 recovery plans. What will you do to make sure everyone can access the mental health services they need?

▪︎ The Mental Health Act 1983 is now hugely out of date. It takes away people’s dignity and freedoms unnecessarily and sees Black African and Caribbean people disproportionately detained, restrained and placed on Community Treatment Orders. A new draft mental health bill has finally been introduced to parliament and we can’t afford to lose any momentum on this. Will you commit to ensure a reformed Mental Health Act is passed by Parliament before the next General Election?

▪︎ Children and young people have been among the most negatively impacted by the pandemic. And, too many young people in urgent need of support for mental health problems like an eating disorder or severe anxiety are having to wait months, or even years, to get help. Looking across the NHS, support in schools and the community, how will you make sure young people get the support they need if they are struggling with their mental health?

▪︎ People with mental health problems are more likely to end up in poverty. And people facing poverty are more likely to have a mental health problem too. It’s a 2-way link that needs to be broken. How will you ensure people with mental health problems are supported during this growing cost-of-living crisis?

▪︎ Good mental health is about so much more than good mental health services. To really improve the lives of people with mental health problems, and to reduce the number of people who become unwell in the first place, the government needs to look beyond the NHS. Will you commit to continuing the work already started to develop a 10-year cross-government mental health plan?
