Plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic straws – many of us have given up single-use plastics because we know they are littering our oceans and endangering wildlife.

But what about the fishing industry? A huge proportion of the plastic and waste in our oceans is ‘ghost gear’ – lost or abandoned fishing gear. According to World Animal Protection, a staggering 640,000 tonnes of ghost gear is left in the oceans every year. That’s more than a tonne a minute.

Did you know that cows, pigs and chickens are ocean predators too Aquayemi-Claude Garnett? Millions of tonnes of fish are added to livestock feed every year. It may seem counterintuitive, but eating meat and dairy can impact our oceans just like eating fish does.
