Let’s talk about hedgehogs. I love hedgehogs – cute, humble little creatures that I remember seeing often when I was a kid. But – just like tigers, Asian elephants and Sumatran orangutans – hedgehogs are on the verge of extinction. WWF reports that populations of wild animals have dropped by 68% on average in the last 50 years. Scientists say that we are in the midst of the world’s sixth mass extinction.

Why? Because human activity has destroyed the land these animals call home, whether that’s tropical rainforests or wild hedgerows.

Animal agriculture is one of the leading drivers of habitat loss. Animal agriculture needs loads of land, not just to house and graze the animals, but to grow feed for them too. And it’s precious wild land that is sacrificed: according to a 2018 study, about 70% of the cleared lands in the Amazon rainforest are used as cattle pastures.

There’s one last compelling reason to take action to reduce your land-use footprint.

Now prepare yourself, Aquayemi-Claude Garnett, I’m going to say the C-word… coronavirus. Since early 2020, Covid-19 has had a devastating impact on us all, and UN scientists believe the underlying cause is our destruction of nature. By destroying wild land, they say, we take away the natural buffer that protects us from animal-borne diseases, and so the risk of future pandemics increases.

We’re losing 18.7 million acres of forest every year. It’s time to make a change.
