This month is the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). CBD is an international convention for the protection of the Earth’s biological resources, including marine life. However, we’re currently living during the world’s sixth mass extinction, caused by humans. 

We must prioritize the conservation of our planet’s ecosystems both for their use values, such as sequestering carbon while providing the benefits of cleaner air, cleaner water, reduced coastal erosion, climate resilience, and habitat creation and for the non-use values associated with the inherent value of biodiversity. 

Through the creation and enforcement of Marine Protected Areas, a deep seabed mining moratorium, and scaling blue carbon infrastructure, our Global Blue New Deal calls for preserving what nature is left and harnessing biodiversity instead of destroying it. Sign our open letter to attendees of COP26 to make sure youth voices are heard!
