As a child, Tom Oakley was in and out of hospital with cystic fibrosis. Then, aged seven, he started dancing. By 12 he had left mainstream school to devote up to 60 hours a week to dance. He has not been admitted to hospital since.

Now, in a story reminiscent of the 2000 dance drama Billy Elliot, the 18-year-old from Liverpool has won a place at the elite Rambert School, the ballet and contemporary dance academy in Twickenham, southwest London.
