Join us for this month’s Virtual Talk on July 29 @ 6-7:30 PM Eastern Time with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalists Robin McDowell & Esther Htusan! π«
Robin McDowell is an investigative reporter who won the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service in 2016 for her teamβs international investigation of the fishing industry in Southeast Asia. Taking on great personal risk as she traced seafood caught by victims of modern-day slavery to U.S. supermarkets and pet food providers, her work led to dozens of arrests, the seizure of ships worth millions, and the introduction of legislation in the U.S. Congress. She continues her work today investigating social and environmental crises across the world.
Esther Htusan is an esteemed investigative journalist from Myanmar. In 2015, working as part of a four-women investigative team alongside Margie Mason, Robin McDowell and Martha Mendoza, she brought to light the stories of enslaved fishermen. Their stories detail human rights abuses including imprisonment and torture, unlawful burials and many are now living under constant fear of reprisals. The investigation spurred the release of more than 2,000 trapped fishermen.
We are so excited to have Robin and Esther join the Ocean Uprise Community! Already RSVP’d? Sharing is caring – repost on your story to invite your friends!β
