As of July 29th humanity will have used more from nature than our planet can renew in a year.⁠ At present it would take 1.7 Earths to support our collective demand on nature. From Earth Overshoot Day until the end of the year, humanity operates on ecological deficit spending.⁠⁠

Almost no corner of the planet is untouched by human activity. Our impact on Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and wildlife has tipped Earth from the Holocene into a new geological era, the Anthropocene.⁠⁠

After coal is burned in a fossil fuel power plant, the remains are pumped through pipelines into huge ponds – used as a landfill to prevent the release of ash into the atmosphere. Although the use of ash ponds in combination with air pollution controls decreases the amount of airborne pollutants, the structures pose serious health risks for the surrounding environment as chemicals in the ash can leach into groundwater and surface waters.⁠
